Health Technology Assessment


What is a Health Technology? Any form of intervention to improve health, such as drugs, devices, diagnostic tests, medical equipment and procedures relating to health care and its services, including prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a condition.

A medical technology includes medical devices, in vitro diagnostics, imaging equipment and e-health solutions used to diagnose, monitor, assess predispositions and treat patients suffering from a wide range of conditions.

European Parliament further clarifies Commission proposal on HTA for medical technologies, paving the way for negotiations with the Council

Brussels, 3 October 2018 – Today, the European Parliament voted on a new regulation on Health Technology Assessment (HTA), setting the stage for negotiations to take place in the Council. MedTech Europe recognises the positive elements introduced by the Parliament with regards to assessing medical technologies. This builds the foundation for further negotiations with the Council.

This document suggests principles of “appropriate stakeholder consultations that we believe should be established in HTA cooperation. Our goal is to contribute to constructive dialogue and we are more than happy to further elaborate on these points.

“Appropriate Stakeholder Consultation” in the EU Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Network established in accordance with Directive 2011/24/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 2011 on the application of patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare.
