Eliminating sharps injuries

Healthcare workers, too, can be exposed to accidental injuries when using devices such as syringes, scalpels and scissors.

They may also have to handle broken glass or plastic which can cut or puncture the skin. These ‘sharps’ have the potential to transmit serious blood-borne infections such as HIV and hepatitis.

Medical technology manufacturers are continuously working to develop safer approaches to injections. For example, retractable needles and catheters equipped with safety shields can reduce the risk of being exposed to needles.
