Blood safety

Safety of the blood supply is an integral part of a modern healthcare system. Blood transfusions save millions of lives every year. However, if robust measures are not taken to ensure safety, blood products can be vectors for infectious diseases.

Medical technology has a major role to play in ensuring the safe and efficient collection of blood. This protects donors and recipients of blood and blood products. A range of medical devices are used in the collection, testing, processing and storing of blood. These include the bags to gather and store donated bloods, anticoagulant solutions to stop the blood from clotting and the apparatus to separate it into its component parts.

In addition, diagnostics and treatments have been developed which can detect and deactivate viruses or bacteria, and sophisticate storage equipment has been designed to ensure products are kept in optimal conditions.
