MedTech Europe in cooperation with EU40 hosted The Standing Men: Technologies for life. The event took place at the entrance of the European Parliament during 10-13 October and gathered various stakeholders who discussed the value of medical technologies, for people and for healthcare systems. The art exhibit - a unique light and sound installation - was created by AADN, a team of artists from Lyon, France. The display drew attention of many policy makers and stakeholders across Brussels and beyond. Many noted the unique approach of coupling the life-like statues with the voices of people in the EU healthcare community. The initiative also generated a surge of discussions in the media and an extensive online conversation on the innovative approach of MedTech Europe and The Standing Men.
“I am delighted to report a resounding success of our event The Standing Men: Technologies for life! Our objective was to promote the value of medtech. We have exceeded this expectation with a surge of enthusiasm for our technologies and widespread applause for the innovative art installation. Finally, I am pleased to see even more key stakeholders talk about how medical technologies can save and transform lives!” Serge Bernasconi, CEO of MedTech Europe, EDMA and Eucomed.
18 sessions were held throughout the week, including themes such as diabetes, orthopaedic and community care, eHealth, personalised medicines, patient safety and antimicrobial resistance. Participants included representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), the OECD, European Commission DG Health and Consumers and DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, the European Parliament as well as several national governments. The week also included voices from key organisations including European Alliance for Personalised Medicines (EAPM), Health First Europe (HFE), European Health Parliament, and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Europe. The sessions were hosted in the medtech tent which also included displays of innovative technologies from the world of medtech.
The Grand Reception included a key note address by Member of European Parliament, Michał Boni who highlighted the importance of innovation, patient centric care and the value of an integrated healthcare pathway.
The event was a true success with more than 200 visitors in the tent each day and many more curious people interacting with the statues and learning more about medical technologies through art. The press and social media coverage complemented the on-site engagement and activities.
Thank you to all for enriching the discussions and contributing your say on the crucial role of medtech for the future of healthcare!
