Brussels, 08 September 2020 – MedTech Europe has published a paper on the future of diabetes treatment and care in Europe, gathering insights from a wide range of leading experts in the field.
Through a series of in-depth interviews, including people with diabetes, clinicians and healthcare professional organisations, co-author Professor John Nolan gathered expert perspectives on the latest trends and developments in diabetes care and their implications for the future. The resulting paper, “A Vision for DigitallyEnabled Diabetes Care in Europe,” is available for download.
The publication of this paper will be accompanied by a two-part webinar series to discuss the findings. The first webinar will be held on Tuesday, 15 September 2020, at 14:00 CET (registration here). The second webinar will be held on Tuesday, 20 October 2020, at 14:00 CET (register here).

More than 60 million Europeans have diabetes, and the rates are growing quickly, placing enormous demands on health systems. At the same time, digitisation continues to profoundly shape all aspects of society, promising both new opportunities and challenges for diabetes care in particular.
Based on the intersecting trends of high diabetes prevalence and the rise of digitisation in society, can we rethink how care will be provided for people with diabetes? How do leading diabetes experts view digital technologies and virtual care? What changes might we see in the future for people with diabetes, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders?
The paper first explores broad common themes from these experts’ perspectives on the future of diabetes care, then narrows in on the implications of what this future can mean for different stakeholders, including people with diabetes, healthcare professionals, and healthcare systems overall. It also touches on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in shaping these trends.
The promising vision that emerges from these expert interviews is of a better, achievable, and digitally enabled future for diabetes care.
