Cutting carbon, saving lives: harnessing medical technology innovation and competitiveness for healthcare decarbonisation
Posted on 04.12.2025
13 November 2025 featured Health Day at COP30 – a critical moment to reflect on decarbonising healthcare and how a competitive Medtech industry can contribute.
As healthcare and sustainability are no longer parallel conversations but deeply intertwined, innovating for human health and for planetary health turn into two sides of the same coin: saving lives!
In our recent report commissioned to Boston Consulting Group, we dive deeper on the critical climate and health nexus and identify a sector specific emission baseline. We showcase the potential of innovative technologies, describe the barriers, opportunities and key decarbonisation levers for MedTech companies and their feasibility.
The report lays out the key pillars of a roadmap and enabling framework for the sector to reach net zero emissions by 2050, in line with a 1.5 °C emissions reduction pathway. Most strikingly, the report finds that the cost of inaction is likely to exceed the cost of decarbonisation by 2035 due to carbon pricing policies, taxes and fines, raw material prices and risks.
