A possible Section 232 Investigation hits medical devices – what now?

Posted on 02.10.2025

On 26 September 2025, the US Department of Commerce published a notice for a public consultation on a possible Section 232 Investigation concerning robotics/industrial machinery as well as personal protective equipment (PPE), medical consumables and medical equipment including devices. The objective is to determine the effects on the US national security of imports of these goods.

MedTech Europe is assessing the scope and potential implications of a Section 232 Investigation into the medical technology sector and remains concerned about the potential trade restrictive measures that might result from it and the subsequent adverse impact on patient access to fundamental medical technology.

MedTech Europe continues to call for the elimination of tariffs on the sector and strongly encourages interested companies to participate to the public consultation on the possible Section 232 Investigation.
