Greener, smarter healthcare: Electronic Instructions for near-patient tests

Posted on 24.10.2025

MedTech Europe has launched its new booklet “Greener, Smarter Healthcare: Electronic Instructions for Near-Patient Tests.”

The publication highlights the vital role of near-patient (point-of-care) testing, which allows healthcare professionals to deliver fast, reliable results directly where care is provided – from hospitals and ambulances to community clinics.

As healthcare becomes more digital and decentralised, Electronic Instructions for Use (eIFU) can make diagnostics safer, greener, and more efficient. Yet, under current EU rules, paper instructions remain mandatory for near-patient testing devices. Aligning this requirement with Europe’s digital and sustainability objectives would mark an important step toward a more future-ready healthcare system.

The booklet outlines how eIFUs offer clear advantages:

  • Easy access anytime, anywhere
  • Up-to-date, searchable content
  • Enhanced accessibility for users
  • Lower environmental impact

Nearly 90% of healthcare professionals already prefer eIFUs over paper versions.
MedTech Europe calls on EU policymakers to modernise current rules and enable eIFUs for near-patient testing devices – a simple step that would reduce waste, streamline healthcare, and support Europe’s transition to a digital and sustainable future.
