EU–India Free Trade Agreement: key implications for the medical technology sector
Posted on 05.02.2026
The conclusion of negotiations on the EU–India Free Trade Agreement marks an important step forward for medical technology trade between the European Union and India, with implications for patient access, market access and competitiveness.
A central element of the agreement that is beneficial for the medical technology sector is the elimination of tariffs on the vast majority of medical devices exported from the EU to India. These products have historically faced relatively high duties, in some cases reaching up to 30% depending on the product. Reducing tariffs removes a significant trade barrier for EU-manufactured medical devices and strengthens their competitiveness in the Indian market, while reinforcing Europe’s attractiveness as a place to develop and produce medical technologies.
The agreement also includes provisions on customs and trade facilitation, technical barriers to trade, transparency and good regulatory practices, as well as the establishment of a dedicated Working Group on Conformity Assessment.
Throughout the negotiations, MedTech Europe engaged closely with the European Commission, providing technical input to support a workable and effective framework for the medical technology sector. Attention now turns to implementation, where MedTech Europe will continue supporting a practical and effective application of the agreement for the sector.
