EU–Switzerland relations: renewed momentum on mutual recognition
Posted on 05.03.2026
On 2 March 2026, the European Union and Switzerland signed a broad package of agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation and providing a more stable framework for market access. The package updates several existing agreements, including the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA).
It provides for an update of the MRA and its Annex. The Annex sets out sector-specific rules across twenty product sectors and includes provisions for the mutual recognition of conformity assessment certificates, allowing products certified in one market to be accepted in the other without duplicative procedures.
The updated Agreement, together with its Annex, will enter into force alongside the broader package once both sides have completed their respective ratification procedures. Until then, the current framework remains unchanged.
On the EU side, ratification requires the consent of the European Parliament followed by formal approval by the Council. In Switzerland, the package will be submitted to Parliament and is expected to be subject to a public vote, with timing and details still to be confirmed.
