Recommendations on the Packaging and Packaging Waste proposal
Posted on 05.10.2023
In view of further proceedings of the European Parliament on the Commission proposal for revising the existing Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive, MedTech Europe issued its key recommendations on the draft report of the responsible Environment Committee.
MedTech Europe shares the objectives of preventing packaging waste generation, boosting high-quality recycling, reducing the need for primary natural resources and creating a well-functioning market for secondary raw materials. At the same time, the packaging of medical technologies has to meet the highest safety standards for patients according to the sector-specific Regulations (EU) 2017/745 and (EU) 2017/746 and maintaining access to life-saving and life-sustaining medical technologies is key.
Our key recommendations include securing the functioning of the internal market, setting in place a material-neutral approach with respect to recyclability requirements on medical packaging waste, and enacting appropriate timelines for transitioning to recyclability at scale in the healthcare sector.
