New GMTA paper on Data Protection, Privacy and Global Health Data within the Medical Technology Industry

The Global Medical Technology Alliance (GMTA) has recently published the “White Paper on Data Protection, Privacy and Global Health Data within the Medical Technology Industry”.

The document presents principles and considerations on the implications of data protection within the medical technology Industry. If on the one hand health outcomes and the development of life-saving R&I increasingly depend on the collection, sharing and use of health data, on the other hand, data protection and privacy legal requirements risk being misapplied to the health sector. Consumer-focused privacy regimes combined with restrictive data localisation laws applied to the health sector risk disrupting the development and supply of established and innovative medical technology products and solutions to patients and healthcare systems.

Therefore, the paper proposes global principles that protect individuals’ health data from misuse and cybercrime, while also allowing responsible uses of that data to advance critical healthcare technologies.

GMTA provides a forum for the development and advocacy of policies that support innovation in medical technology to address patients’ healthcare needs. Its members are associations from around the world representing manufacturers of medical technologies.
