Ahead of the informal meeting of heads of state on 09 May, current President of the EU Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, makes suggestions on the future of Europe.

In a 80-page long strategic document published on 30 April 2019 he outlines five policy recommendations. One of them calls for a ‘Fair Europe’ and includes the need to aim for “high-quality, affordable and sustainable health care” and urges for a digital transformation of European health systems.

As the highlighted challenges in Europe in health are multifaceted, including for example AMR, shortages, availability and affordability of medicines, the issue of medical deserts (geographic areas that lack health facilities), and the loss of medical professions in several EU regions the paper underlines that that healthcare should be a top priority for the next European Commission.
