MedTech Europe Diabetes Group supports renewed international focus on diabetes

World Diabetes Day 2022 took place this past 14 November and centred around the theme “education to protect tomorrow”, including the importance of education in self-management.

Self-management accounts for 95% of diabetes care. Effective self-management is a highly demanding 24/7 task, which is crucial in order to avoid life-threatening health complications. Digitally enabled medical technologies play a key role in supporting people living with diabetes in their self-management journey. Please have a look at the infographic outlining the ecosystem of digital diabetes care, and the role medical technology can play in managing type 1 and also type 2 diabetes.

Addressing the challenge of diabetes also requires strong political will. In this light, MedTech Europe’s Diabetes Sector Group highly welcomes the recent adoption of the European Parliament resolution on prevention, management and better care of diabetes in the EU. This resolution, together with the EU NCD Initiative launched by the European Commission to support Member States in addressing the growing challenge of diabetes and other NCDs in Europe, plays an important role in building the political momentum necessary for meaningful action to support people living with diabetes and their care teams, as well as the sustainability of healthcare systems.
