Preventing AMR and HAIs: MedTech Europe Leave-Behind

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) form a major and growing public health threat across Europe: AMR results in 35,000 deaths in the EU annually, while HAIs account for 70% of the AMR burden and infect 4.3 million patients3 each year – 1 in 10 patients. Medical technologies play a critical role in addressing the challenge of AMR and HAIs from prevention to detection and diagnosis to treatment and surveillance. The contributions of medical technologies result in few infections and improved patient outcomes, shorter hospital stays and reduced mortality, and cost savings for healthcare systems.

Nevertheless, the adoption of medical technologies remains uneven and inconsistent. To more effectively address AMR and HAIs through medical technologies, MedTech Europe urges policymakers to prioritise HAI reduction, expand access to rapid diagnostics, leverage technologies for stewardship, invest in innovation and foster an integrated One Health approach.
